My Girl The River consists of American songwriter, vocalist and producer Kris Wilkinson Hughes. Joined by British bassist husband (and co-writer of the Annie Lennox hit No More I Love Yous), they have created a ‘living, breathing body of art’ (John Allen, president of New West Records). Wilkinson’s songs, created over a two and a half year period, took on a very different direction to their previous project, Cicero Buck, who over the years gained fans and praise for their four folk/pop/rock recordings. Now, more suede than swagger, more roots than pop, paying tribute to old school producers such as Owen Bradley (Patsy Cline), artists like Johnny Cash, and songwriters such as Gretchen Peters, Willie Nelson, Gillian Welch, Patty Griffin, Townes VanZandt, Steve Earle and Jason Isbell.
This Ain’t No Fairytale blends the genres into a tasty potion that brings about feelings of love, melancholy, nostalgia, hope and longing. Kris proves herself as a great modern day storyteller, basing many of her anecdotes on her Louisiana upbringing, namely her hometown of Covington. Showing no fear, there are truths, white lies, fables and moral tales woven into the album. The core musicians (Kris on vocals and acoustic guitar, Joe on bass, and Jacob Lundby of Denmark’s the Sentimentals on drums) recorded the album in two days in the front room of Kris and Joe’s house. A chance meeting with John Garden (Music Director to Alison Moyet) allowed them to indulge Wilkinson in her hope of recording the album live as one unit. The additional instrumentation came in the form of electric guitars and strings recorded in Nashville and acoustic guitars and a whole myriad of other acoustic instruments recorded in Bedford the day after tracking.
