Kathryn Williams – Over Fly Over

Although one of the UK’s most celebrated contemporary folk singer/songwriters (courtesy of a Mercury prize nomination and one-time major label backing) she remains a distinct and individual artist and it’s no surprise that this, her fifth album sees her back on her own label.

Often likened to Nick Drake in style and approach she’s best known for her spare acoustic songs, but on every album since her 1999 debut (‘Dog Leap Stairs’) she’s developed as a songwriter.  While the songs on ‘Over Fly Over’ are still fragile, the backing is obviously fuller, the melodies stronger and the instrumentation more imaginative and varied, but all while keeping the delicacy that makes her work so distinct.

The twelve songs cover a range of styles, and this is a disc that could never be called predictable – it’s never outrageously experimental (although ‘Just Like a Birthday’ is a little avant-garde) the overall use of instrumentation and arrangements are not what you’d expect and this gives the album a unique feel.

There are many memorable songs here, ‘Beachy Head’ marries a sunny melody with dark subject matter, ‘Shop Window’ is the most upbeat track with a strong riff and a sixties beat, and ‘City Streets’ is a beautiful acoustic piece full of atmosphere and imagery.

As with all Kathryn’s discs this is a little more challenging than most acoustic singer/songwriter albums, but this is an excellent piece of work that rewards repeated listening.
