The Outside Track – Curious Things Given Wings
Young traditional band The Outside Track are a five piece with members from Canada, Ireland and Scotland, and the mix of styles and influences come together to make them one of the freshest and most interesting groups around.
Mixing their varied musical heritage, along with both new and old traditions creates a unique style that is genuinely distinct – the group of Mairi Rankin, Fiona Black, Norah Rendell, Ailie Robertson and Cillian Ó’Dálaigh are all stellar instrumentalists with fiddle, accordion, flute, harp and guitar creating the backdrop to the lead vocals of Rendell for the songs.
‘Curious Things Given Wings’ is a well balanced mix of both songs and tunes that are thoughtfully sequenced, with the songs and tunes fitting together perfectly, and the comprehensive liner notes complete with lyrics for the songs really add to the overall package.
Highlights are shared across the both the songs and tunes, the middle sequence of ‘Caroline of Edinburgh Town’ and ‘Belladrum Outhouse’ really show the group at their best with a beautifully delicate song leading into a superb tune, that highlight the skills of all 5 members.
There’s an air of confidence and quality across all 12 tracks here, and it’s all presented with real energy and élan - an excellent modern folk album that irresistibly fuses various traditions together.
