The Kennedys – Songs of the Open Road

Prolific they may be, but every one of The Kennedys discs (this is their ninth album) has something to offer – while their trademark 60’s folk/rock sound of jangly guitars and tight harmonies has been ever present, the material has always a great mixture of original material and covers. This album changes things a little as it’s a collection of their favourite travelling music – and there are a couple of inspired selections amongst the 14 songs.

While a Byrds track and a Nanci Griffiths song were obvious choices (‘Eight Miles High’ and ‘Late Night Grande Hotel’ respectively), there are surprises scattered throughout with songs from the Flying Burrito Brothers, Dave Carter, Nick Lowe, Victoria Williams and Jimmy Webb all sitting together.

The overall sound is a little folkier than their normal discs, but the arrangements are still rich and complex, and the harmonies are as brilliant as ever.

Highlights include the oblique war commentary of ‘Galveston’, a faithful but delicate reading of Dave Carter’s ‘Happytown’, and the relaxed and tranquil version of Victoria Williams’ ‘This Moment’.

Pete and Maura can certainly write a great song, and it’s obvious they can pick a good cover too - much care has gone into picking the source material and the strong and memorable versions show how much these songs mean to them. Recommended.
