Mindy Smith – One Moment More
‘One Moment More’ is Mindy Smith’s debut album, but the quality and craft of the writing and musicianship on the disc is far removed from most debuts. She has a beautifully pure and rich voice which covers a broad musical range, and she sounds similar to Alison Krauss but with a slightly more nimble voice. Even though she is a striking singer, she plays things fairly low key and there are no unnecessary vocal gymnastics or over-blown emotion and this allows the quality of the songwriting to really shine through. Mindy is a candid writer, her songs are personal and direct and are delivered with a straight-forward eloquence that really involves you – the two best tracks on the disc ‘Raggedy Ann’ and ‘One Moment More’ are perfect examples of this articulacy, they’re both quiet acoustic numbers that are beautifully fluent and expressive, and they pack an emotional punch without ever sounding cloying or over-done.
While she may now be based in Nashville and had a track on the recent Dolly Parton tribute album (a great cover of ‘Jolene’), rather than being a country artist she’s a straight forward acoustic singer/songwriter, albeit a very good one. Stylistically she has much in common with Patty Griffin, and the whole album has a similar stylistic and instrumental feel to Patty’s ‘1000 Kisses’ disc as it’s acoustic based while being dynamic and rich in musical variety.
The production by Smith and Steve Buckingham is excellent, overall it’s fairly spare and the material has been handled carefully – her voice is always clear and it continues the restrained and subtle feel present throughout.
This is an excellent disc and it’s one that will make an impact on everyone who hears it - it’s safe to assume that Mindy Smith is a name we’ll be hearing much of in the future. Highly recommended.
