Canadian singer/songwriter Susie Ungerlieder (check) has released a handful of critically and commercially successful discs as Oh Susanna over the past 10 years, moving from dark acoustic alt-country songs (Johnstown) to more commercially sounding material (Sleepy Little Sailor). Whichever approach she’s taken, she surrounded herself with great musicians and her great vocals have convinced at every turn.
Her varied albums have earned her the best songwriter award at the Canadian Juno awards, and her last couple of releases have both been nominated for best album awards.
Here she walks the path between both styles effortlessly, and her clear alto has enough character to sound effortless on both acoustic numbers and full on band tracks.
On ‘Soon the Birds’ she’s teamed up with Juno award winning producer David Travers-Smith and they’ve spent over a year putting the tracks together and fine-tuning all the details.
Her band consists of some of the great and good of modern Canadian music with members of Blue Rodeo, and members of Kathleen Edwards’ and Ron Sexsmith’s band making up the core of the musicians on the disc.
Over the course of her 5 previous albums, she’s been recognised for her thoughtful and contemplative songs, and there’s no change here with 11 great songs that focus on the human condition, with layered songs and stories that unravel over the course of a song, but leave just enough questions unanswered to keep the listener thinking.
There’s an embarrassment of riches to choose from when looking for highlights, ‘Your Town’ packs a really lyrical punch that demands the listeners’ attention; and ‘Millions of Rivers’ and ‘Pretty Blue Eyes’ both focus on her superb vocals.
‘Soon the Birds’ is a brilliant album, and will be one of the albums of the year. Unmissable.
