Jory Nash – Spaz Loves Weezie

Although improbably titled (it’s taken from a piece of graffiti Nash saw whilst on the road in his native Canada), this, his fourth and strongest independent release is an accessible, varied and intelligent collection that deserves to be recognised by the wider singer/songwriter audience.

Jory’s approach is subtle and considered and there’s a natural feel and flow to the songs; the lyrics, style, instrumentation and song structure are all varied and effortless.

Although the songs are stylistically varied, it’s his voice and guitar work that really tie the 13 tracks together - his vocals are distinctively warm and smooth, and range from softly delivered phrasing to a fuller more resonant style when required; his finger picked guitar is equally restrained, it’s detailed, graceful and melodic, the two gel together incredibly well.

Musically this is a really varied and dynamic disc – mandolin, electric guitars, piano, Hammond and violin are amongst the instrumentation provided by a strong group of musicians who include Jim Bryson, Lori Cullen and Ari Posner.

Highlights include ‘The Conversion of Pearl Hart’, a great song describing his fellow Ontarian Pearl Hart, the last person and only woman known to have robbed a stagecoach; but the real standout is ‘Love on the Northern Side’, a lyrically excellent tale of missed opportunity that’s beautifully performed and sung.

‘Spaz Loves Weezie’ is an album that deserves recognition; all the tracks are strong with excellent lyrics and melodies, it’s easy to enjoy but with enough depth to rewards repeated listening.  Highly recommended.
