Pete Morton – Flying an Unknown Flag
Over the past few years Pete Morton has produced some of the best British folk influenced singer/songwriter discs around - his albums are, without exception uniformly excellent, this new collection continues the trend as it's full of memorable songs with strong wordplay.
'Flying an Unknown Flag' adds a little more instrumental depth than some of his previous discs and the addition of occasional fiddle, mandolin, accordion, harmonica and bass brings an extra dimension to his songs.
The collection has a very English feel to it, not really due to the way in which it's played but in it's subject matter; a description of a film of everyday life shot in 1905 ('Great Gold Sun'), a chance meeting with an old friend ('The Busker's Song), and brief glimpses of ordinary people going about their everyday business ('The Post Office Queue') are all rich in English culture and imagery.
The strength in Pete's writing is his ability to convey an image or emotion to the listener, it's a combination of the quality of the writing and his natural delivery, and there are tracks on the album that will really hit home with many people on many different levels.
There are many highlights, the album ends with 'Another Train' one of his best known songs, but one which still carries a powerful message, 'Busker's Song' is a wonderful study of the ideology of youth and the realities of adulthood, and 'Great Gold Sun' is packed with detail, imagery and atmosphere.
This is a superb collection of songs that will appeal to a wide audience, the writing is as good as anything on offer from his more well known US counterparts, he has a good ear for a melody (and especially a chorus) and the vocal and instrumental performances are excellent throughout.
If you already know Pete then no further introduction would be required, those not familiar with his work will find this disc a revelation - very highly recommended.
