Lynn Miles has long been a favourite of ours, a versatile artist who has grown over the last 10 years or so into one of the very finest singer/songwriters around.
Seven albums in, the winner of many Canadian folk music awards and a 2003 Juno, she’s moved around from Canada to Nashville and Austin, but now back in Canada, she’s delivered the finest album of her career with ‘Fall for Beauty’.
This album marries her travels into a perfect mix, where mainly acoustic and open arrangements meet with the hooks and melodies of Austin. She has always been an emotional and vulnerable writer, bringing real feeling and depth to her lyrics; and she’s at her very best here with songs that take the ups and downs of all life’s trials and tribulations and present them with real sincerity.
A couple of songs in the middle of the album ‘Cracked and Broken’ and ‘Love Doesn’t Hurt’ highlight the strength in her songwriting skills, the latter song in particular is a powerful and thought-provoking piece of the very highest quality.
Too add to the quality of the writing, and the beautiful acoustic arrangements, her vocals have never sounded better – her effortless trademark phrasing is still very much evident, but the clarity of the recording and sweetness of the vocals sound better than ever.
There is quality at every turn with this disc, and absolutely no weak points across the 10 tracks – stylistically varied and beautifully constructed songs that have a real connection with the listener. This is one of the finest singer/songwriter discs in recent memory, and easily one of the albums of the year. Very highly recommended.
