Maz O’Connor, finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award 2009, is one of the most promising voices to emerge onto the folk scene in recent years. Drawing on both British folk and songwriting traditions, her debut album ‘Upon a Stranger Shore’ arranges traditional and original tracks in an original and thoughtful manner.
A collection of sea shanties that benefits from the melodic voice of Maz and sophisticated production. A number of the songs are combinations of songs or ‘patchworks’ as she calls them that add to the interest and draws the listener in.
There is a strong collection of musicians that includes Sam Sweeney but it is Maz’s beautiful voice that stands out. One of the finest folk releases this year. A very strong debut.
