Lucy Wainwright Roche – Lucy
Having such close family ties to the singer/songwriter life though her parents Loudon Wainwright III and Suzzy Roche, along with her brother and sister Rufus and Martha; it seemed inevitable that Lucy would tread the same career path as a singer/songwriter. Despite the name, she’s making a name all by herself and building from the ground up in the time-proven, contemporary folk way, picking up the Falcon Ridge Emerging Artist award in 2008.
This is her first full album after a pair of well received mini albums, and is a real statement of her quality as a writer and performer. Eleven songs, all originals with the exception of Paul Simon’s ‘America’, and they’re all presented in the classic American contemporary folk manner, where traditional instrumentation and values crossover with more contemporary influences.
Produced by Stewart Lerman, the disc is built around her impressive vocals and acoustic guitars and suits her honest, melody led songwriting; she’s joined on the disc my a number of contributors including Loudon, The Roches, The Indigo Girls and Stuert Smith who provide a range of instrumentation and vocal contributions across the disc.
Like her live performances, this is an album full of charm, character and personality, and it seems appropriate that it’s a low-key release that will be loved and enjoyed by all those who make an effort to track it down.
