Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky (all label mates from Red House Records) come together as Red Horse on this brand-new collaborative project from three of the most respected songwriters in North American folk music.

In the tradition of Cry Cry Cry (which saw Kaplansky join forces with Dar Williams & Richard Shindell) this album is a mix of their own songs and a few covers, what they do differently though is that while the songs may mostly be their own, it’s never the original performer taking the lead; so Gorka takes on Kaplansky’s ‘If These Walls Could Talk’, Eliza sings Gorka’s ‘Forget to Breathe’ and so on; in addition to looking back at old songs, the album also features new material from all 3 writers.

As you’d expect from three great singers, they all provide backing vocals throughout, and the signature of the album are the beautiful harmonies that are present on each track.
Instrumentation is used sparingly, but effectively, throughout, and the trio use some of the finest musicians around including Duke Levine & Ben Wittman to provide a delicate backdrop for the exceptional vocal performances.

All 12 songs are strong, but it’s the songs that Gorka takes the lead on that really stand out, the balance of the vocals with him taking the lead is perfect - beautifully smooth and effortless with Eliza and Lucy adding depth and colour to his rich vocals; listening closely, it’s easy to see from the performances how much they enjoy working together.
This feeling of friendship and camaraderie touches every song and it’s creates and an album that has a low-key, laid back feel that delivers on every level. A perfect album for a relaxing summer (or winters’) night! Unreservedly recommended.
