Kris Delmhorst, Jeffrey Foucault & Peter Mulvey – Redbird
Redbird is the collective name for the trio of Kris Delmhorst, Jeffrey Foucault and Peter Mulvey (and in this recorded form add David Goodrich to the group). All three main artists will be familiar to most as established folk singer/songwriters covering different styles from edgy and contemporary through to earnest and traditional.
The choice of material for the disc is diverse and intriguing, each of the three have provided a song and the remaining 14 tracks come from a variety of sources, some well known, others less so – amongst the songs are pieces from Greg Brown, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits as well as two traditional songs.
As you’d expect from a group singer/songwriters, acoustic guitar is front and centre in the mix, but contrast is provided by fiddle from Delmhorst as well as mandolin and slide guitar from David Goodrich.
This album is a relaxed and understated acoustic affair, all four are obviously enjoying the recordings and there’s a natural feel to the guitar work and harmonies.
There are many highlights amongst the excellent material, and standouts include Greg Brown’s ‘Ship’, Peter Mulvey’s ‘Ithaca’ (sung here by Delmhorst) and a wonderful reading of Dylan’s ‘Buckets of Rain’
The combination of three great singer/songwriters, a hugely talented multi instrumentalist and 17 great songs was never going to fail; but the Redbird album lives up to expectations and impresses throughout.
