Diana Jones – High Atmosphere

‘High Atmosphere’ is the third album in Jones’ folk/roots career that has seen her become one of the most respected contemporary artists occupying the traditional American folk territory, and she’s successfully brought the mountain ballad tradition into the present day and to a whole new audience.
This new album has an almost live feel to the recordings with space around the instruments and vocals, and this gives the whole disc an austere, homespun air with a timeless atmosphere.  While the sounds and sensibilities of the disc come from the tradition, she doesn’t approach the mountain-ballad tradition as an antiquated format with stories of a hundred years ago, but as a vehicle for speaking of events and the human condition in 2011.

She brings together a small core group of musicians that include guitars, fiddle, banjo, mandolin and bass, and these are joined by guests including Duke Levine & Jim Lauderdale across a few songs.

The title is taken from an old Rounder album that producer Ketch Secor (Old Crow Medicine Show) had given to her, but the song relates the floods in Nashville in 2010 and the uncertainty of coming home and not knowing what to expect.

Beautiful sparse arrangements and her distinctive voice make this an album with real character and personality.
