Jim Moray – In Modern History

Jim Moray is the most progressive of the modern group of British folk musicians, and while some of the more short-sighted and entrenched on the folk scene have dismissed him, Jim is very much an artist who studies and respects the tradition – he just explores it in different ways to most and is not afraid to take a chance.
His willingness to alter, re-write and generally amend songs is of course exactly what people have done for centuries – and he brings a fresh and occasionally surprising slant on some well known (and not so well known) songs, that makes all his output, and especially this album, compelling listening.
He’s a talented multi-instrumentalist and a dedicated producer of own albums, and he’s excelled himself here with a exciting and imaginative range of instrumentation that is all mixed and presented in his distinct style.  He provides guitars, piano, drums, synth, mandolin and cittern (to name only a handful), and he’s joined by a list of musicians including Eliza Carthy, Jackie Oates, Saul Rose and James Delarre who add a range of instruments and voices to the mix.
The whole album is full of strong tracks, but a few standouts include the  Appalachian ‘Silver Dagger’ which has undergone a little rewrite that adds a new twist to the story; ‘Jenny of the Moor’ is an early 20th century song that sounds contemporary, and the opening song ‘Bristol Harbour’ is a great songs of transportation that builds into a full-on band track with fantastic electric guitar that accentuates the whole point of the album – these songs are not rooted in mists of time, but are still evolving and totally relevant.
He may divide opinion at times, but Jim is one of most important artists on the UK folk scene and this album represents a current high watermark.  Essential.
