Rachel Harrington – Celilo Falls
This is Harrington’s 3rd album in as many years, and while the first two were solid Americana singer/songwriter discs, ‘Celilo Falls’ sees her take a real step up in quality with a collection of personal, character driven songs that are packed full of emotion, detail and atmosphere.
Taking its name from a once raging and bountiful waterfall that has been buried and lost to the progress of modern life. The instrumentation, songs and characters of the album take the listener back in time to evoke the ghosts of the classic gothic American landscape.
A solid mixture of styles ranging from beautiful, solo, finger-picked songs, through to full band arrangements that feature the classic American folk instrumentation of guitar, dobro, fiddle and pedal steel. The classy production, which echoes the ‘less is more’ approach of Harrington’s plaintive vocals, really lifts this disc out of the sea of contemporary Americana discs, and puts it up there with the recent excellent albums from Diana Jones and Martha Scanlan, and it means her material is very accessible to a wide range of both singer/songwriter and folk fans.
The only slip up is the terrible cover art, but look past this, and there’s a fantastic album here that captures a genuine spirit of American folk music and narratives of real life.
