Dala – Girls from the North Country

We carried Toronto duo Dala’s last studio album (‘Everyone is Someone’) and the mix of folk and pop presented with effortless harmonies made it one of the most accessible albums we carry.  It’s taken a little while for this new album to make it from Canada to the US and then to Europe, but we should be grateful if has as it’s an excellent collection.

Recorded live but in such a way that it adds to their sound – some of the poppier edges are gone and this is acoustic contemporary folk at its best.
The vocal performances here are even better than the studio recordings, and the quality of the harmonies are exceptional, both girls are beautiful singers but this environment really shows them off at their very best.

The album is a mixture of self-written tracks and covers including songs from Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Robbie Robertson, and the pacing across 12 songs is perfect.  Towards the end of the album the add The Good Lovelies and Oh Susanna to the mix on a memorable reading of Robertson’s ‘The Weight’.

Their effortless harmonies and tight performances bring to mind Madison Violet or The Webb Sisters, but they have enough of a unique sound to really stand out from the crowd. ‘Girls from the North Country’ is a superbly performed, recorded and presented collection, not to be missed.
