Lucy Ward – Adelphi has to Fly

Although Lucy Ward is only a young singer/songwriter, she’s made a real impact on the English folk scene through the weight of her character and her confident stage performances.  This personality and skill secured her a deal with Navigator (the home of Bellowhead, Kris Drever and more), and with this debut album and a host of festivals appearances throughout 2011, it’s obvious that Lucy is going to an artist at the centre of the UK folk scene in the years’ to come.
A modern artist, Lucy covers both traditional and modern folk genres, and mixes her own original songs in amongst these; her own songs are not just a nod to writing either as the finest song on the album ‘Alice in the Bacon Box’ is her own, and the lyrics to ‘F for Love’ and ‘Adelphi’ and ‘Bricks and Love’ show that she’s already a superb writer.
Produced by Stu Hanna of Megson, the presentation is beautifully crisp and clean, with the focus on her distinctive vocals that proudly show her Derby roots at times.  Her sets are interspersed with unaccompanied songs and it’s a device used to great effect her on the fantastically memorable ‘A Stitch in Time’, but it’s the songs where she’s backed by other musicians that really shine through.
She provides guitar and concertina, and is joined by Hanna (banjo, mandolin), Sam Pegg (bass) and Belinda O’Hooley (piano) and when it comes together it’s all beautifully balanced.
‘Adelphi has to Fly’ is one of the finest and most mature debut albums from a young artist – absolutely not to be missed.
