Louise's previous album 'Ride' is one of our favourite albums of the past few years - full of understated character songs with a relaxed and open acoustic backdrop. 'Written in Red' continues in a similar acoustic vein, but introduces more Celtic and roots influences into the mix, creating a more detailed sound but keeping the relaxed feel of her previous albums.
The 11 tracks features a mixture of self-penned material and a couple of covers, including Ray Bonneville's superb 'Two Bends in the Road', a great cut with rhythmic acoustic guitar work and smooth vocals. Elsewhere 'Miriam Bell' tells the tale of a murder and the consequences of the act - a real folk tale; and the title track depicts the final acts of a troubled relationship in a track full of atmosphere and a tangible sense of location. She covers the full range of emotions and brings life to the characters that inhabit her songs; it's all too easy for the listener to become immersed in the imagery and detail present in her songs.
".Taylor's songs fall together like interleaved chapters in a book of life's experiences."
