‘Where the Mangoes Are’ is the perfect example of an American contemporary folk disc – songs of thoughtful observations sit alongside the occasional traditional or political track, and while it’s full of crisp acoustic guitar work, electric guitar and drums are occasionally present adding contrast and a subtle groove to the disc.
The twelve songs tend to concentrate on the human condition, from the highs and lows of love, through to friendship and death. While the subject matter my not suggest it, this is a disc that’s easy to enjoy; Kate has a warm and emotive voice and sings her songs with genuine feeling, and this combination engages the listener on many levels.
There are a number of superb tracks here, and examples across the range of styles are, ‘Mercy’ an intelligent protest song and a striking swipe at the current US administration; ‘Fires’ is a melody rich upbeat song about relationships that’s both transparently obvious but also full of rich metaphor; the final song ‘Softhearted Girl’ is stunning, a simply arranged, bitter break-up lament that is beautifully performed and sung.
‘Where the Mangoes Are’ is an understated and considered disc, it’s full of excellent performances (especially the vocals), and the songwriting is superb throughout. One of the best contemporary folk albums around – very highly recommended.
