Dave Alvin is a Californian born and bred songwriter whose albums cover a huge range of styles, from pioneering Americana roots/rock in the 80s through to a superb folk album in 2000. This new album celebrates the songs and songwriters of California; all the names you'd expect to see on a who's who of Californian songwriters are present and correct, but there a couple of inspired surprises - songs from John Stewart, Jackson Browne, Brian Wilson, Merle Haggard, Tom Russell and John Fogerty all sit together on this 13 song album.
While probably better known for his songwriting and guitar work than he is as a singer there is no question as to his ability as an interpreter of songs. The individual elements of the collection all reflect a different piece of California , from life in the labour camps, through the decadence of the 70's to the State's links to surfing and beach life.
Thematically, this is a stimulating album and he's wisely opted for a laid back feel to the backing that allows the lyrics and atmosphere to take centre stage, and he certainly knows how to tell and deliver a story. While his interpretation of ' Sonora 's Death Row' lacks the pace and guitar work of Richard Shindell's version (from the Courier bonus CD) the track has real drama. The highlight of the disc is the stunning rendition of Wilson 's 'Surfer Girl'; it's a beautifully tender song full of yearning and warmth with the best vocal performance of the album. A fascinating and excellent album full of a variety of superb songs.
