The trio of Knightley, Lakeman and Witts is an unlikely combination – three contemporary folk singer/songwriters all at varying stages of their careers brought together by shared roots in the West Country.
The tracks are a mixture of pooled material with all 3 providing songs for the disc; and while there are identifiable differences in songwriting styles, the consistency in the vocals and instrumentation gives the disc a cohesive feel and makes the changes in approach subtle which in turn gives the album a natural flow.
While Seth and Steve are well known and respected contemporary folk artists, Jenna Witts will be a new name to many, although only 16 she has worked with ‘Show of Hands’ and her writing and especially her vocals belie her youth. This is most evident on Seth’s ‘Image of Love’ (the highlight of his ‘Punch Bowl’ album), the female vocal gives the song a different feel, and her vocals are controlled, confident and delicate – it’s a strong song and a wonderful vocal performance.
This trading of songs continues elsewhere with Knightley taking Seth’s ‘The Ballad of Josie’ and Seth returning the favour with ‘The Keeper’ and both songs work well with the fresh approach, they’re different in feel to the originals but equally strong in their new format.
The instrumentation is all acoustic with a subtle British contemporary folk sound; Steve provides a variety of guitars, Seth tenor guitar and some stunning fiddle, and Jenna keyboards – it’s deceptively simple, the overall sound is rich thanks to some wonderful arrangements and excellent production.
Highly recommended.
