Originally released in the US in 2004 it’s taken a while for this, her second album, to reach Europe; but in this case, late is better than never as it’s an album that really deserves to be heard, and an excellent and diverse collection of melodic and intelligent piano led songs.
A sensitive singer/songwriter in the Sarah McLachlan vein, Teng’s songs are both sensitive and confident, and are packed with quiet intensity provided by her superb piano work and strong vocals.
Although this is a thought-provoking an intelligent disc, it has an instant appeal thanks to the memorable melodies and musical variation over the 14 songs. All the tracks have strong melodic themes and the arrangements and song structures are varied with excellent and sometimes unexpected instrumentation in places.
‘Warm Strangers’ is a compelling album, musically sophisticated with sharp lyrics and interesting stories throughout. Highly recommended.
