This album has been subject to all kinds of delays over the past few months, creating a real sense of excitement and anticipation around the release. It's certainly been worth the wait, 'Unity' is a superb collection of self-penned story songs that hint at the British folk tradition, but sound really fresh and contemporary.
There is an embarrassment of riches to choose from on Unity, but the pick of the bunch is the 7 minute long 'Spanish Bride', a truly epic song reflecting the ups and downs of real life during warfare, this dramatic tale of human life is a fantastic story delivered with real emotion - a compelling track. There's social comment aplenty throughout the album, especially the title track and 'From Where I Lie', a sombre tale of the plight of small farmers in the UK; Tams himself is quoted as saying that some songs are "in many ways a journal of the last decade".
Elsewhere on the disc he teams up with Linda Thompson who delivers some beautiful vocals on 'Somewhere the Sun is Shining", and the upbeat 'Whole New Vision' gets the album off to a great start. Throughout the collection his voice is as strong and smooth as ever, delivering each line with perfect understanding and feeling for the mood of the song.
The whole set is superbly constructed, it's full of melodies, varied instrumentation and is all held together with some intelligent production - a disc that deserves to find a place in every collection. "...refreshing, melodic and performed with taste and integrity..."
