This debut release from Bill (actually Belinda) Jones missed out on the last mailer, and has had a couple of extra months to make its impression - and there's no way we could leave it out of this issue.
Bill is a young English singer and 'Turn to Me' contains some excellent trad material, as well as some of her own, equally good self penned songs.
Comparisons with Kate Rusby are inevitable, and in a similar way, it's the clarity and sweetness of the vocals that make the first impression. She is a gifted singer and all of the vocal performances are refreshing and instantly appealing - melodies are always strong and her delivery adjusts well to suit the variety of song styles.
Musically most of the songs are built from the piano up, with some excellent accordion, flute and flute adding colour and depth throughout the album.
This is a really accomplished debut album, strong performances all round, good variety in the choice of traditional material, and the albums high point, the title track is a self-penned song.
"…Bill is a real talent, and this is the first release in what looks likely to be a very successful career…"
