Tropical Brainstorm is Kirsty's first album since 1994 - and it's been well worth the wait. This disc is dripping with Brazilian/Cuban influences, but don't expect 'Buena Vista Social Club', this is pure singer/songwriter territory complete with acerbic, witty, intelligent lyrics and strong melodies throughout. There's a great pace to the album from the single 'In These Shoes?' with its clever innuendo and driving, to the albums standout song; the disarming and emotive 'Wrong Again' - an unpretentious and honest track about the end of a relationship. Elsewhere clever one liners and couplets litter the 13 songs, 'England 2 Colombia 0' a track about picking a man up in a pub is one fine example ("You lied about your status, you lied about your life. You never mentioned your three children and the fact you had wife").
Tropical Brainstorm is an album full of personality and experiences everyone can relate to, but manages to keep it's tongue firmly in cheek. For those who only know Kirsty singing Billy Bragg's 'A New England' or from The Pogues 'Fairytale of New York', this is an excellent place to start on her solo material.
"...Tropical Brainstorm is funny, clever and sexy - a rare treat..."
