This, the second Equation album, sits comfortably in the ground labelled 'folk/pop'. The influences of both are apparent in the choice of tracks (a mixture of self-penned and traditional) and in the instrumentation (violins, mandolins, electric guitars and bass).
Kathryn Roberts provides the vocals, and will be better known to most of you for her work with Kate Rusby on their duet album. Kathryn's distinctive voice shines here on the quieter numbers, but she's equally at home on the more upbeat, louder tracks. She has the ability to adapt her voice to suit the song and is always convincing, regardless of the style of individual numbers.
The others in this six-strong line-up provide some excellent musical
backdrops, with the use of the violins and guitars often giving proceedings an 'edge'. Combine that with some inspired track choices - plus Kathryn's vocals - and you have one of the best albums of this year; one that easily stands out from the melee of other new releases currently jostling for your attention.
There are numerous highlights on The Lucky Few, including 'Too Much to Say' and 'Not the Man', but the fantastic 'Sheffield Park' has it all! It's contemporary British folk at its raucous best - driving guitars, intricate fiddle lines and powerful vocals. Stirring stuff.
An album that will appeal to almost everyone, it occupies the middle
ground but proves to be an invigorating listen for traditionalists and pop fans alike. Highly enjoyable and highly recommended.
