The press release that accompanies this self released singer/songwriter disc provides real illumination into the album and offers markers as to how the distinct feel of the disc was developed. In brief, Clare grew up as a classical violinist, after college she moved to Boston to develop her songwriting, guitar and performing style, and after a few years moved back to her home town of Nashville to become involved in the musical community – all three of these diverse experiences and influences are identifiable on this excellent debut disc.
Clare has an expressive, smooth and understated voice, easy to listen to but full of character and detail, and this is complimented by the musical backing. There is a good range of instrumentation and musicians, but the arrangements are subtle and quiet and the restrained use of drums and percussion gives the disc a fluid feel that really suits her vocal style.
While it may be a subtle and relaxed album, there’s a huge amount going on in the songs, the arrangements are superb - restrained but full of tiny details, and the vocal melodies are equally strong - varied and refreshing. ‘The In-Between’ has a degree of musical sophistication and a lightness of touch not often present on singer/songwriter discs, and the fact that it’s a debut album from a young artist makes this all the more impressive.
Personal favourites include ‘Where You Are’, a track in the ‘Boston Area’ singer/songwriter mould; ‘Another Day Down’ which has a Southern feel in both lyrics and music; but the pick of the disc is ‘Hold On’ it has excellent vocals and melody as well an arrangement that is varied and dynamic – a wonderful song.
This is an excellent disc that has a huge amount to offer all fans of singer/songwriters, and it’s certainly one of the best debut albums you could wish to hear. Essential
