Gorka's long awaited new release is aptly titled, one look at the credits show a truly all-star cast, Lucy Kaplansky, Mary Chapin-Carpenter, Patty Larkin and Ani Difranco are present on 8 of the 14 mainly acoustic tracks.
The use of such luminaries could have overpowered the album, but like everything in this recording it's handled with subtlety and a lightness of touch - this is a classy disc from start to finish.
As with all his previous releases, the songwriting is wonderful, full of closely observed character sketches, understated wit, and people and situations that create a real connection with the listener - it's easy to relate to the various situations the songs feature.
The disc is consistently first-rate throughout, but the standout tracks are 'A Saint's Complaint' with Lucy Kaplansky, and 'Oh Abraham' with Ani Difranco, both are perfect examples of what he does best - melodic story songs with his rich baritone delivering the lines in a relaxed, intimate manner.
'The Company You Keep' is full of superb musicians, there are superb acoustic and electric guitar performances on every single track, and the addition of the various guests on vocals gives the whole album variety and a ensures the whole disc is enjoyable.
Basically, if you know Gorka's previous releases then you know just how good this disc will be - for those who don't know his work, then this is a great introduction to one of the very best singer/songwriters around.
