Although now living in the USA, Martin Simpson certainly had his grounding in English folk music, and this collection of 13 exclusively English songs sees him return to his roots in some style.
Well known as one the very finest guitarists around, this disc is not just a vehicle for him to demonstrate his virtuosity, his sublime technique and skill never overpowers the songs - the melodies are strong and he creates real atmosphere with his sensitive interpretations.
This being an English folk disc the body count is high, people always get their comeuppance, and things generally end up pretty messy for the characters in the songs. There are many highlights here, from 'Polly on the Shore', a cautionary tale to single young men, and 'The Bramble Briar' and 'Betsy the Serving Maid', both accounts of servants courting their master's children, not surprisingly both end with a death.
As with many trad folk discs, the quality of the material is astonishing, the brevity of the songs belies the depth in the stories - they ebb and flow, and are fully constructed tales in around 5 minutes. Add to this some excellent liner notes which explains a little of each song and it's easy to become captivated by the narratives. Most of the tracks are just Martin and guitar, but Martin Carthy joins him on three tracks, and cello, accordion, and harmonica appear occasionally - all of these are used sparingly, and add colour and depth to the disc.
This one of the most accessible trad folk disc we've ever come across, the choice of material is superb, the performances first class, and it has broad appeal to singer/songwriter and folk fans alike. An exceptional disc.
