Carrie is an artist who has quietly producing quality albums since 1994, never picking up huge amounts of press, but picking up musical converts with each new release and through enthusing fans.
She is perhaps best known for her lyrics and narrative command - she's an acute and sincere lyricist and offers commentary, depth and feeling in her songs without ever going over the top - a rare feat!
But as with her previous discs, it's not the lyrics that hit you on the first few listens but the music; it's full of layers, restrained yet complex arrangements and strong melodies. The smart use of instruments adds to the whole package and complements the excellent guitar work (both acoustic and electric) - for example the cello and piano on 'Sparrow' adds real musical depth to an excellent track.
There's lots to enjoy here both musically and lyrically, and it's certainly an album that will reap rewards the more it is played.
With this new release Carrie will only add to her list of fans - it's an excellent album that followers of Mary Chapin Carpenter, Lucy Kaplansky and Shawn Colvin will really enjoy.
