Iowa born duo of Benson Ramsey and David Huckfelt’s approach to music carries a number of identifiable influences; the rustic Americana feel echoes elements of fellow Iowan Greg Brown (although much less bluesy); the lyrical and melodic themes have elements of Josh Ritter, and most obvious of all is the production of Bo Ramsey (Benson’s father) who’s trademark guitar and production appears throughout.
While the comparison to Brown is true to a certain extent, it’s fair to say that The Pines have a much more contemporary sound – the open spaces of ‘traditional’ folk is still present but it has a rougher, grittier edge that you’d expect from a duo in their 20s; think a moodier version of Ritter and you’d be getting close.
Excellent haunting and evocative guitar work from Benson & Huckfelt provide the backdrop for the songs, and this with the edgy, often dark lyrics give the Pines a distinct flavour. It’s not all doom and gloom though, there’s instrumental colour from strong musicians who add mandolin, cello, bass, drums and there’s some upbeat banjo in places.
Lead vocals come mainly from Ramsey, who sounds like a young Dylan in places, but Huckfelt adds lead to a couple of tracks and they both sound good when singing together.
As a contemporary hybrid of folk, blues, Americana mixed with a little indie rock The Pines have an individual sound – it’s full of atmosphere and has a dark, but not unrelenting, air. It’s an excellent album, and those willing to dive in will find themselves well rewarded.
