We carried on of David’s earlier albums back in 2005, and it was great to receive another album from an artist with such a distinct approach and sound.  It seems we’ve missed a disc or two in the interim, but it’s evident that he’s lost none of the individuality, and is in fine voice with an album that blurs the line between folk / singer-songwriter and pop, with lyrics that prove him to be a thoughtful and compelling storyteller.

He has a distinct vocal style, that’s immediately warm and inviting and that draws the listener into the songs – it’s most effective on the slower more acoustic tracks that show his folk leanings, but it really soars on some of the upbeat band tracks.  This versatility gives the disc real pace and variety, and the dynamic difference between the beautiful banjo picking and tight harmonies of ‘Steel Mill’ and the almost rock edge of ‘Parachutes’ creates a unique feel to the album.

This range and variety could have resulted in a disjointed collection, but it’s all held together by his distinct vocals; his voice and delivery are beautiful and utterly convincing from the near-falsetto on the opener ‘George Square’ to the upbeat, towering arrangement of ‘Hope for Better Days’.

Berkeley provides much of the instrumentation here including acoustic and electric guitars, but he’s joined by a good range of musicians who add an eclectic range backing colour including brass, strings and even a Corsican choir.

‘Some Kind of Cure’  is an exceptional album that successfully bridges the gap between folk and contemporary singer/songwriter material, and that also provides instant accessibility and a depth that comes out over repeated plays.  A disc not to be missed.
