Best known as the guitarist and singer with Scottish modern traditionalists Breabach; in 2008 Ewan Robertson became the first singer/guitarist to win the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the year award, and this prestigious award comes with a recording deal with Greentrax that has resulted in this fantastic solo album.
As well as being steeped in the tradition, he’s obviously has a keen ear for contemporary song has the album is based around some fantastic and often unusual song choices including sources as diverse as Richard Thompson (Vincent Black Lightning), Steve Knightley (Man of War) and Phil Ochs (When I’m Gone).
As you’d expect he’s put together an amazing collection of musicians for the disc including Angus Lyon, Ewan MacPherson, Emily Smith and a couple of Breabach members in Patsy Reid and James Lindsay. Even with a wide range of instrumentation, the whole album is centred around Robertson’s guitar and vocals, and the gathered musicians add some sensitive and subtle colour to the disc.
‘Some Kind of Certainty’ is an album of real class and charm – the song choices are distinct, the arrangements and delivery restrained and considered, and it’s full of warmth and personality. Very highly recommended, and a singer/songwriter album with a different feel to much of the North American and English output.
