It seems an age since "Hourglass" was released, which makes this new release from Kate all the more welcome. This release has 11 tracks, a mixture of "traditional drowning ballads and castle knocking down songs", her own songs and a fantastic cover Iris Dement’s "Our Town". Once again the choice of tracks is inspired, she breathes new life into traditional works and manages to make them accessible for new listeners, as well as engaging for people familiar with the songs. The production is excellent, the quality of the individual performances is clearly visible, and the whole recording is crisp and clear, allowing Kate’s mesmerising voice to shine through. An essential album for everyone, and our favourite of the year (so far!).
