This is a disc that we've wanted to include in a mailer from day one, but as it was originally released in 1993 on the small Boston label Eastern Front it has been difficult to obtain for a couple of years now, but we've finally managed to find a supply source - so here it is…….
'Say Something' is an album that has aged gracefully - it sounds as fresh today as it did 7 years ago; the songwriting is still brilliantly sharp and sophisticated. As with all Ellis' releases the songs are full of great melodies, but it's definitely the lyrics that stand out.
The following verse is taken from 'Look at the Wind Blow', but any track could have been picked as an example.
"Now the life of the local beauty queen is tied to the captain of the baseball team / they got a baby on the way / at least that's what the kids are saying / and the wedding I'm told well it must take place / to save both families from disgrace / but the whole town knows / you see it's not like she's not showing."
The list of musicians helping out on the disc is just as impressive; Bill Morrissey, Duke Levine, Patty Griffin, Jonatha Brook and Jennifer Kimball are amongst the people providing the support. 'Say Something' is an exceptional example of contemporary folk / singer-songwriter music at it's best.
