This album, Kate’s fourth release takes you on a journey through Pan-American culture, stopping off to highlight the stories of individuals along the way. Her lyrics are so full of feelings, sharp observations and empathy for the subject that you’re always fully convinced with the image she portrays, and are easily drawn into the story.Musically the album is obviously US contemporary folk, there are influences apparent in many tracks, and it’s all delivered with a gentle Southern edge. Kate has a good ear for the hook and the album is full of memorable melodies that certainly stick with you long after you’ve listened to the album. There are numerous highlights, from ‘Rosa’s Coronas’, a story about the dedication and pride a Cuban woman feels in her art of making cigars, to the chorus and bridge of ‘Heart of Hearts’ which is pure magic – it manages to be reminiscent of both Abba (lyrically and the production) and Bob Dylan (the bridge could have come straight from Like A Rolling Stone). The title track itself is a strong example of Kate's work - lyrically excellent with a chorus that you'll be whistling for many moons to come - it's an intoxicating combination! There is so much to enjoy on the album, the musicians, the production, the melodies, the lyrics….the list just goes on and on. If you don’t know Kate Campbell this is a prefect place to start, those of you who know her earlier work will need no further encouragement. An excellent album.
