‘Reverie’ is a striking album in many ways, and throughout its 48 minutes it proves to be one of best examples of contemporary American folk music that we’ve heard over the past year or so.
The simplicity of the arrangements contrast perfectly with the intensity of the lyrics and vocal delivery, and this combination engages the listener from the opening strains of ‘All of My Dreams/Most of the Time’ right through to the final moments of the moving ‘September’.
Backed by acoustic and traditional country instrumentation, Ledford delivers songs that cover a wide range of subjects from tales of the Civil War (‘Belle Isle’), stories of urban frustration, anger and ultimately murder (‘Lately’) through to a tender recollection of a show he performed in New York in September 2001.
Beautifully written and performed ‘Reverie’ is a delicate and subtle album full of depth and intelligence – very highly recommended.
