A few years ago Newcomer wrote a short story called ‘Betty’s Diner’ which in turn became a song on her previous release. ‘Regulars and Refugee expands this theme as the entire album is set in the diner and the 13 songs tell the stories of the characters in there; the waitress Miranda is a constant throughout but each song has a distinct tale to tell.
From the stories of Jennifer a single mother who dances for a living, Angela a recovering addict, through to Kevin a frustrated musician the songs and stories are varied and full of fine details – this is helped by a superb set of liner notes that flesh out the scenes and characters; it’s an impressive addition that helps bring the story and characters to life.
While it may be a concept album of sorts, the songs are in her usual folk/country style and are melody rich, memorable tracks; there are many strong individual pieces this is an album that sits together best as a suite of songs listened to in sequence.
‘Regulars and Refugees’ is a touching and thought-provoking glimpse at the struggles of daily life and love – an excellent album.
