‘Purely Second Guesses’ may well be 24 year old Beck’s debut album, but the depth and quality of the writing, instrumentation and arrangements reveal an artist who has spent time playing live gaining experience and confidence before releasing an album. These years spent understanding the singer/songwriter craft is what separates her album from the pack of artists who self release their own disc – rather than just acoustic guitar and limited backing, she uses piano, a variety of strings, mandolin and harp to complement her guitar work, and this gives the album a rich and varied sound.
Her voice is distinct, clear and strong, not unlike early Dar Williams in range and phrasing; this style suits the reflective lyrics well and the memorable melodies give the vocals an instant impact.
The variety of styles over the disc create contrast and pace – from the full band arrangements on ‘Roots’ to the delicate harp and strings of ‘Make Believe’ the songs are all thoughtfully constructed and full of variety.
The 10 tracks are all memorable, but the highlights include the melody led ‘Between the Lines’, the contemplative ‘Winter & Rain’ and the beautiful arrangement and vocals of ‘Make Believe’.
‘Purely Second Guesses’ is an impressive and substantial debut from a talented young British singer/songwriter and an album that deserves to be appreciated by a wide audience. Highly recommended.
