The Mecurymen are three acoustic UK singer/songwriters who have seen their stock on the rise after a chance meeting as all three were working as session musicians, the obvious chemistry between Jinder, Simon Johnson and Gavin Wyatt has brought them to the notice of many; and after signing to a high profile label, the trio are likely to become deservedly more well known in 2009.
All three are accomplished guitarists, but it’s the harmonies that really mark The Mercurymen out from the pack; there are obvious influences on display from the lush harmonies of Crosby, Stills & Nash, through to the instant hooks of Crowded House, with many reference points in-between, including nods to both traditional English & American folk music and the famous vocal groups of the past 30 years. While this many eclectic influences may have left the album too disjointed, the superb harmonies and smart writing bring it all together to form an album where everything fits and feels part of a cohesive whole.
Jinder provides the lead vocals across the 11 songs, and has vocal phrasing reminiscent of Ellis Paul; this comparison can be extended to the whole album as the trio’s acoustic and electric guitars are augmented by violin, cello, bass, accordion and percussion that creates an album as varied as it is vocally smooth.
The album is full of strong melodies and well written songs, and it’s fitting that the highlights come a range of styles, from the acoustic singer/songwriter track ‘A Song to Myself’, through to the full acoustic band sound of ‘Making Plans’ the quality of the material, performances and production is of the very highest standard.
