A few albums and a recent EP in to her recorded career, Pieta Brown has focused the potential obvious in these earlier releases and has crafted a distinct and mature album that stands out in the Americana singer/songwriter field.
The daughter of Greg Brown, this album sees her on her natural home of St Paul based Red House Records (her very early years were spent living in the very house that gives the label its name!), and this album sees her keeping the company, and sitting comfortably, amongst some illustrious label mates.
Like her father, she’s an arresting poet/singer-songwriter who occupies the ground between alt-country, folk and blues – it’s much less blues influenced than Greg’s output, and her style reflects a more contemporary American folk in sound and style. Using acclaimed producer Bo Ramsey on the disc in an inspired move as no-one understands and explores the roots/folk landscape as successfully as Ramsey.
Many of the songs reflect and connect with the American landscape and in particular her own physical roots – this is understandable given the amount of travelling Pieta has taken in through her life (17 different house before she was 18!). The connection between land and music is rich and varied in North America, and she continues this relationship with a relevant and contemporary approach.
Universally appealing, but uniquely American this is an album of real craft and skill – it will undoubtedly be a critical success, but it has everything in place to be a hugely successful album. Not to be missed.
