'Milk of the Moon' is Greg's 16th release on Redhouse Records, and the first for many years not to feature Bo Ramsey (who had other commitments working with Lucinda Williams). The absence of Ramsey has created a far more open and raw sound, than his previous few releases - it has a much more stripped down and earthy feel, and this appears to give his brilliant songwriting a more personal edge. Percussion is used sparingly, and the beautifully restrained backing vocals from Karen Savoca work superbly with Greg's distinctly gravelled voice. Given the imperious quality of Brown's back catalogue, 'Milk of the Moon' holds it head up high, and is a great album from an artist widely acknowledged and respected as one of the greatest singer/songwriters of the past few decades.
