Mascara Falls was released in 1995 and is as good a debut album as you’re likely to hear, there isn’t a filler on the whole album and every track stands up to extensive repeated listening. Musically, it’s a mixture of pop and rock songs but all with a contemporary folk backdrop; it makes for story songs with intoxicating melodies – a great mix. The songs are vignettes into the lives of ordinary people, ranging from a fading star performing in a small town to a story about the Statue of Liberty being set free, all with Heather’s lyrics creating a colourful and vivid backdrop for her characters. The album shows that Heather is a real individual talent with a fantastic ability to create songs that’ll keep you entertained for a long long time. Highly recommended.
