The Canadian folk and roots scene has grown in profile and stature over the past 10 years, with a good number of excellent artists picking up fans outside of North America. Since the release of his debut album in 2004, Justin Rutledge’s profile has been on the rise, and this new album looks certain to cement him as one of Canada’s most respected singer/songwriters.
‘Man Descending’ is a little smoother and softer than his previous disc, and he treads a similar sonic path to Josh Ritter, where very light Americana influences mix with strong lyrics and melodies; but like many Canadian artists there’s a more relaxed and more comfortable air that distinguishes him from his American contemporaries. Although like Ritter, he’s not afraid to change the mood and style of the songs, it’s certainly a varied disc with a broad range of instrumentation and atmosphere over the 10 tracks, and from the angelic tones of ‘St Peter’, through to the country/rock of ‘A Penny for the Band’ this is a collection that really holds the listener’s attention.
This diversity is evident in the range of people who join Justin on the disc to provide vocal and instrumental support – Ron Sexsmith, Oh Susanna, Jim Bryson, Catherine MacLellan and Jenn Grant are amongst the gathered musicians.
The songs are loosely inspired by a short story collection (‘Man Descending’, Guy Vanderhaeghe 1982), and the songs portray 10 characters and their lives; it’s thought-provoking material that really deserves to find a wide audience.
‘Man Descending’ is another excellent disc from the Canadian singer/songwriter scene, it’s both accessible and full of strong, intelligent songs; add to this some of the finest artists in Canada and you have a memorable album. Very highly recommended.
