Although this is Andrea’s debut solo album, she’s an artist with a long history of contributing to other peoples discs, amongst the artists she’s worked with are Alison Krauss, James Taylor, Trisha Yearwood and Lyle Lovett. This list may lead you to think that this album will be a fairly straight-forward country collection, but this is way off the mark as ‘Love Goes On’ is a relaxed acoustic blend of bluegrass, Celtic and folk with subtle elements of country mixed in. Her session work has obviously made her some great musical contacts as the list of musicians who join her is really impressive, and there are contributions from Tim O’Brien, Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas and Vince Gill amongst others.
Zonn has an excellent voice; it’s pure and uncomplicated and has a refreshing simplicity that makes it very easy to listen to – definitely a case of ‘less is more’. Considering she’s renowned as a fiddle player, the use of strings is surprisingly low-key, she plays an assortment of stringed instruments on most tracks but it’s always understated, and there’s real elegance to the playing and arrangements throughout.
The 13 songs are all well chosen covers from contemporary writers such as Beth Nielsen Chapman, Paul Brady & Karla Bonoff, and there isn’t a weak track amongst the selection, but ‘Galilee Road’ and ‘Pages’ are both excellent songs that really stand out.
Everything about ‘Love Goes On’ is of the highest order and there’s an air of quality over the whole project – the vocal and instrumental performances from all involved are superb, the song choices are strong, and it’s easy to listen to and enjoy right from the off. Recommended.
