Leaving the rest of the excellent folk-pop group The Nields behind for this release, sisters Nerissa and Katryna still have the distinctive vocal traits of the group, but the songs are presented in more acoustic, open, and relaxed manner.
Stripping away the band allows the wonderful harmonies to stand out, more often than not they sing in close harmony, and this is a style that works incredibly well - they both have unique voices, and the harmonies are always interesting, well defined, and take some unexpected and exciting turns in places.
All the songs are written by Nerissa, and while varied in style, flirting with both country and folk in places, this is really a traditional North Eastern America singer/songwriter disc - intelligent folk/pop music with real character.
While acoustic based, a good number of the tracks feature a wide variety of instrumentation, with some notable guitar and percussion work from Kevin Barry and Lorne Entress respectively, other details are provided by accordion, fiddle, dobro, and cello.
'Love and China' is a wonderful album, melodic and with some excellent and varied harmonies across the fourteen songs. Intelligent folk/pop doesn't come much better than this.
