Following on from her previous disc, the critically and commercially successful 'Hard Times in Babylon', comes 'Lost and Found', a new studio album that certainly maintains, and even improves on the high standards set by the previous release.
The first things that hit you with 'Lost and Found' are the quality of Eliza's vocals, and the strength and variety of the melodies - her voice is delightfully unique, and one that stops you in your track and compels you to listen. The melodies, both instrumental and vocal are really strong across all 10 songs, they're all full of great hooks, and even the hymn-like melody of 'Heart of a Man' is incredibly memorable.
Instrumentation is fairly traditional - mainly acoustic guitar based, and augmented with slide & electric guitar, drums, and bass, but the way that it's implemented is exceptional. The musicians provide a variety of sonic backdrops for her voice to work with, and the guests who include Slaid Cleaves and Patty Griffin provide some strong support on the disc.
Lyrically this is a substantial disc, she's an open and honest writer and there's plenty here for the listener to digest and interpret over repeated plays.
Full of really strong songs, there are many highpoints, from the incredibly radio friendly opener 'Welcome Back', to my personal favourite, the beautiful constructed 'Aphrodite's Face'.
'Lost & Found' is a really strong disc, consistent and really enjoyable, and an album that will certainly increase her reputation as one of the best contemporary singer/songwriters around.
