While Curtis has delivered some excellent albums over her career (notably ‘ A Crash Course in Roses’), this new album is easily her best so far with 12 strong songs and superb playing and arrangements throughout. The musicians involved in the disc reads likes a who’s who of contemporary folk singer/songwriters with contributions from Mark Erelli, Kris Delmhorst, Mary Chapin Carpenter and John Jennings; add to this the musical expertise of Kevin Barry & Lorne Entress and it’s obvious that this is going to be a collection of the highest quality.
With such an illustrious group of artists it would be easy for this album to be swamped in cameos and star performances but that isn’t the case as most of the songs are fairly simple acoustic affairs with plenty of space for the playing to shine and for the lyrics to be heard.
The songs are beautifully written often personal affairs that are thought provoking and engaging; there are two co-writes with Erelli ‘Passing Through’ (which appeared his ‘Hope and Other Casualties’ disc) and the superb ‘People Look Around’ which won the 2006 International Songwriting Competition.
‘Long Night Moon’ is an excellent singer/songwriter disc in the New England tradition; thoughtful and well crafted songs alongside acoustic arrangements of the highest quality. Highly Recommended.
