New to the Signature Sounds label, US quartet Lake Street Dive have a unique sound and from the moment you hear the opening few seconds of ‘Hello? Goodbye!’ you know you’re in for something a little out of the ordinary.

The band of Mike Calabrese (percussion), Bridget Kearney (upright bass), Rachael Price (vocals) and Mike Olson (trumpet wielding guitarist!) create an acoustic sound that rides a groove-laden wave over every influence you can think of. The results are infectious, catchy and adventurous, but the whole collection is precise and skilfully arranged; it all sounds somewhat familiar but at the same time utterly individual.

While it’s easy to focus on the inventive arrangements, there are some fantastic songs and lyrics here; the songwriting credits are shared across the disc, with Calbrese and Kearney providing the lions’ share of the songs.  The lyrics are generally wry, sharp, and always crammed with real situations and personalities – ‘Hello? Goodbye!’ is a wonderful kiss-off song, and ‘Neighbor Song’ is a both funny and
The musicianship over the whole album is exceptional – Kearney’s bass keeps everything together, while the band create all kinds of layers over the top.  The element that really hits you is Rachael’s vocal – it’s a voice with real character and charm, and she adds real personality and belief to the sharp lyrics.

There’s certainly nothing like ‘Lake Street Dive’ out there, it may not fit easily into any genre but the results are infectious and guaranteed to bring a smile to your face and get your feet moving! Enter with an open mind and this disc offers much on every level.
